先日、BEWA受講生さんより 『 according to  と in accordance with はどう違うのですか？』 との質問が在りました。是は、此れまで何度かブログ収載を試みては後回しにして来た難題。今回は可能な限り論理的な説明を試みたいと思います。

　先ずは、辞書にて各語の定義を調べますと、

　A: accord to はランダムハウスにて｟廃｠に分類される用例：

　ランダムハウス英和辞典にて accord  を引くと：

『｟廃｠ (…に)同意する、承諾を与える｟to ...｠:

◆you, to his love must accord

御身は、この男の愛にしたがえよ〈Shak.A.Y.L. V.iv.139〉。』

　と、記されています。何と、シェイクスピア (1564～1616) からの引用です。此処で倒置を戻せば You must accord to his love. となります。

　B: according to とは：

　Cobuild にて according to を引くと：

『 If something is done according to a particular set of principles, these principles are used as a basis for the way it is done.（ある特定の一纏まりの原理に依って何かが為されるのであれば、これら原理は其れが為される方法に対する一つの基盤として用いられる）

◆They both played the game according to the rules.』

と、記されています（注：和訳部分挿入）。此処で、

　C: in accordance with とは：

　Cobuildにてin accordance with を引けば：

『If something is done in accordance with a particular rule or system, it is done in the way that the rule or system says that it should be done. （ある特定のルール又はシステムに従って何かが為されるのであれば其れが為されるべきと云う其のルール又はシステムの方法に於いて其れは為される）

◆Entries which are not in accordance with the rules will be disqualified.』

と、記されています（注：和訳挿入）。

　D: principle と system の違い

　此処で、B: according to の定義にある principle を Oxford で引けば、

『principle:

  1 a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.』

と記され、principle が 「the foundation for a system として機能しシステムの基盤として働くもの」 と捉えられ、意味的には system ＞ principle であることが示されています。

　また、C: in accordance with の定義にある system を Oxford で引けば、

『system:

1 a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network; a complex whole: The state railway system 』 と記され、systemをa complex whole と捉えています。更に Oxford で complex を引けば『1 consisting of many different and connected parts』 と 「多くの異なる連結する部分からなる」 と示され、system は a complex whole であり、其れは 「異なり連結する部分から成る全体」 にて示されることが分かります。これらを纏めれば、system (a complex whole) ＞ principle となります。以上、捉える対象は意味的に

in accordance with ～＞according to ～ と考えて宜しいように思われます。

　E: 多くの場合 according to と in accordance with は共に用い得る

Cobuildに according to の用例として用いられている、

◆They both played the game according to the rules.

同様に in accordance with の用例として用いられている、

◆Entries which are not in accordance with the rules will be disqualified.

なる英文は、使用頻度は低くなるにせよ、共に、according to  と in accordance with  とを置き換えて、

◆They both played the game according to the rules. を

　They both played the game in accordance with the rules.

とすることも、

◆Entries which are not in accordance with the rules will be disqualified. を

　Entries which are not according to the rules will be disqualified.

と、することも可能でしょう。

　F: 考察

Cobuild に掲げられた according to の用例、

◆They both played the game according to the rules. は、

　　　　　　　　　↑

  They both played the game, which was according to the rules.

と考え、in accordance with の用例、

◆Entries which are not in accordance with the rules will be disqualified. は、

　　　　　　　　　↑

　Entries, which are not done in accordance with the rules, will be disqualified.

と考えて宜しいでしょう。意味的に in accordance with ～＞according to ～ですので、in accordance with を用いた文章は著す内容がより複雑であることが考えられます（捉える対象は意味的に in accordance with ～＞according to - system (a complex whole)＞principle：上述D参照）

　G: 総括

　According to the weather forecast, it will clear up tomorrow. のように、然るべく according to を用い得る場合は別として、according to と in ccordance with の選択が判然としない場合には、上記 B: にて定義の according to a particular set of principles、C: にて定義の in accordance with a particular rule or system に於いて、system ＞ principle であり 、且つ、system  が a complex whole で在って、捉える対象は in accordance with ～＞according to [ system (a complex whole)＞principle ]　であることを念頭に置き、事象を取り巻く状況が相応に入り組んでいる場合には in accordance with を選択することで宜しい様に思われます。
