今回は、前置詞について、ごく大まかに御話しようと思います。

A) 前置詞とはなにか？

　　Oxfordにてprepositionを引きますと

preposition

noun

＜Grammar＞ a word governing, and usually preceding, a noun or pronoun and expressing a relation to another word or element in the clause, as in ’the man on the platform’, ’she arrived after dinner’, ‘what did you do it for?’

前置詞

＜文法＞名詞あるいは代名詞を支配し、そして通常其れに先立ち、節に於いて別の語或いは要素への関連を表す語、例えば ’the man on the platform’ のon, ‘she arrived after dinner’ の after, ‘what do you do it for’ の for。

　　と、説明されています。

前置詞とは、字義通り、前に於かれる詞（ことば）です。

前述のOxfordの説明、what do you do it for は：

　８７）For what do you do it? 　

              ↓

　８８）What do you do it for?

と、考えることが出来ます。元々は前に置かれていたForが文末、itの後ろに移動したのです。

そしてfor は、

　　　『何のために貴方は其れをするのですか』

と、本来的には for の後ろに位置する語whatとの関連を表しています。

このように、本来的には名詞（句）或いは代名詞の前に置かれ、其の語との関連を表す語を前置詞と云い、前置詞の後ろに置かれる語は、前置詞の目的語と呼ばれます。即ち、前置詞の後ろには必ず名詞（句）が来ることになります。

B) 前置詞の表すもの、概略

・場所を表す前置詞

  at + 地点等（～の地点に）

　８９）I met him at the airport.

  in + 場所等（～の中に）

　９０）I met him in New York.

　on + 場所等（～の表面に）

　９１）I hang the photo on the wall.

  over + 場所等（～の真上に）

　９２）The moon rose over the mountain.

　under + 場所等（の真下に）

　９３）The place flew under the clouds.

  below + 場所等（～の下方に）

　９４）The sun sank below the horizon.

・時を表す前置詞

  in + 年、場所、月　　

　９５）Cathy was born in 2014.

　９６）Cathy will work in New York.

　９７）School begins in April.

　at + 時刻

　９８）Cathy usually gets up at 6:30.　

  at（時刻）+ on（日）+ in（年）

　９９）Betty was born at 7:30 on January 10 in 2015.

　　住所同様、時刻の表示もより狭い領域よりより広い領域に広がって行きます。

  for, during（～の間）

   100）Cathy studied Science for 3 hours yesterday.

   101）Mary will go to Paris during the vacation.　

  from（～から）

　 102）Jim played soccer from 4 to 5 for 2 hours.

  before（～の前に）、after（～の後に）

　 103）I eat breakfast before taking a walk.（taking a walk は動名詞句）　   

   104）I go to school after having breakfast.（having breakfast は動名詞句）

  since（～以来）

　 105）Cathy has been in working in England since 2012.

  at 狭い場所 + in 広い場所 + 時

　 100) Cathy has been staying at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo since last Friday.

        キャシーは東京の帝国ホテルに先週の金曜から宿泊している。

　 　注：場所を表す副詞は時を表す副詞の前に置かれるのが基本です。

・その他の前置詞

　because of（理由）

   101) The goods cannot be shipped because of the lack of raw materials.

　　　　原料不足のため商品は出荷できない。　

　by（手段）

   102) The goods will be shipped by ship.

　about（関連）

   103) Please give us any information about the product.

  with（様態）

　 104) He left the room with all the windows widely opened.

　　　 彼は全ての窓を開けっ放しにして部屋を去った。

　等々・・・

・under と belowのビジネス英語的使用例

   105) The goods were shipped to you under B/L No.4637254.

　 　　商品はB/L(船荷証券)No.4637254の下、御社に出荷されました。

　 106) Please find below our offer for the goods.

　　　 以下、当該商品に対する当社売り申込みをご覧ください。　  　

C）品詞の決定が重要

　 105) The competitor cannot give you better price than us.

　　　 当該競合先は当社よりも良い価格を御社に与えることはできません。　

 と、

　 106) The competitor cannot give you better price than we can.

　　　 競合先は当社が出来る以上に良い価格を御社に与えることはできません。　

 の文末の、

　than us と than we can の than は文法上異なります。即ち：

 　105) The competitor cannot give you better price than us.

 のthan us は、than + we （代名詞）の目的格、即ち此の than は前置詞、　

　 106) The competitor cannot give you better price than we can.

 の than we can は than + 文章、即ち此の than は接続詞です。
