江戸時代の作家、鈴木牧之 (1770～1842) は、雪国の情景を描写した北越雪譜なる本を残しました。2009年、日本画家、柴田長俊氏より北越雪譜をを題材とする同氏作品とエッセイが掲載された「蒼雲の叙事詩」なる本のエッセイ部分の英訳の依頼を受け、同年3月12日、同書籍は私の英訳文を併記し、有限会社ﾋﾟｰ･ｼｰ･ｷｼﾞﾙにより出版されました。また、特別番組 「蒼雲の叙事詩・蘇る北越雪譜」 なる番組がNST新潟放送テレビより2月21日(土）10:00～10:30 放送されました。

　エッセイには鈴木牧之の俳句も引用されており、牧之の俳句も併せ英語で現しました。これまでブログに掲載されたもの五作を纏めご紹介させて頂きます。

　　　　初雪や見慣れし山も一景色
　　　　　　How new the mountain that I used to see is,
　　　　only with the first snow of this year.

　　　　冬の月氷に寒き光かな
　　　　　　There shines the moon in the winter sky,
　　　　dropping the cold lights down to the ice.

　　　　秋風や案山子の骨の十文字　
　　　 　　Standing alone is a scarecrow with its skeleton
　　　　blown by autumn winds in the shape of a cross.

　　　　なにもない野から時雨のはじめ哉　　
　　　　 　From the empty field with nothing up to the sky,
　　 　　coming swiftly straight to me is an autumn rain.

　　　　そっと置くものに音あり夜の雪
　　　　　　Whatever to be softly placed on could sound vividly
　　　　in the silence of the snow falling night.
